STEM Concept Videos

The STEM Concept Videos, produced by the Teaching and Learning Laboratory, are designed to help students learn pivotal concepts in science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM).  Each video is part of a series that represents a cross-cutting theme in the courses that typically appear in first- and second-year engineering curricula (i.e., physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology). The STEM Concept Videos were originally produced for and funded by the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).  SUTD refers to these videos as Concept Vignettes.

These videos are also available for viewing and download on the MIT OpenCourseWare site.

COMMUNICATION

Successful professional communication begins with the ability to analyze situational variables and make strategic decisions.

CONSERVATION

In order to analyze or modify a system, it is important to understand how the laws of conservation place constraints on that system.

DERIVATIVES AND INTEGRALS

Derivatives and integrals are used to analyze the properties of a system. Derivatives describe local properties of systems, and integrals quantify their cumulative properties.

DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

Laws that govern a system’s properties can be modeled using differential equations.

EQUILIBRIUM

To determine whether or not a system is at equilibrium, we must understand how a system's equilibrium state is constrained by its boundary and surroundings.

GOVERNING RULES

A small number of rules describe the physical and chemical interactions that are possible in our universe.

INFORMATION FLOW

This video is part of the Information Flow video series. A system is shaped and changed by the nature and flow of information into, within, and out of the system.

LINEARITY

Many complex systems are modeled or approximated linearly because of the mathematical advantages.

PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

Many events and phenomena are probabilistic. Engineers, designers, and architects often use probability distributions to predict system behavior.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Problem-solving skills, in combination with an understanding of the natural and human-made world, are critical to the design and optimization of systems and processes.

REPRESENTATIONS

Information can be represented in words, through mathematical symbols, graphically, or in 3-D models. Representations are used to develop a deeper and more flexible understanding of objects, systems, and processes.

STRUCTURE-FUNCTION-PROPERTIES

The structure, function, and properties of a system are related and depend on the processes that define or create the system.
