TA Days 2017 - DAY 2
In 2017, the Teaching + Learning Lab is launching TA DAYS, a two-day series of teaching workshops for graduate students and teaching assistants from any discipline or DLC at the Institute. Participants can register for full-day experiences or select individual workshops most relevant to their interests and needs for the upcoming semester.
Friday, September 1st (Location: 3-270) | Back to Day 1 Schedule
Using Active Learning Techniques + Classroom Practice Q&A (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
There is a preponderance of evidence that shows that actively engaging students in the classroom leads to improved learning. This session will provide you with strategies and examples of techniques that you can use to actively engage students in the STEM classroom. This session will also include a discussion of common problems that may arise in the classroom and an open Q&A period so that any questions or concerns can be addressed before starting your fall teaching assignment. This session is geared towards recitation leaders, but all are welcome.
Facilitating Office Hours and Tutorials (12:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.)
In this workshop, you will learn how to get a sense of where students are in their thinking, how to use questioning techniques to encourage students to explain their thinking, and how to help students connect solution steps to course concepts to enhance their learning. Research on effective tutoring will be presented.
Presenting and Planning a Class Session (1:45 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
The thought of leading a class session makes many people nervous. This session will discuss tips for managing stage fright; how to use the vocal, visual, and verbal channels to communicate with your audience; and how to organize a lecture or recitation to best support student learning.
